Yamaha CL5 Consoles used at the Illusionist Show in Dubai
P1120988 (800x600)   Yamaha CL series digital mixing consoles represent a new level of refinement. They offer an evolved experience in accessible mixing, plus sonic purity with sound shaping capabilities that will give the most imaginative engineer unprecedented creative freedom. The CL series embodies the leading standards in live sound in their most advanced, most expressive form. As part of a marketing campaign to boost popularity of the Yamaha CL Series Live sound consoles and reinforce the quality, reliability, flexibility and ease of use of Yamaha consoles to the large fan base of Yamaha console users in the country, local Yamaha distributor in the UAE Thomsun Trading put out a rig for an innovative ‘ Free Test Drive” campaign. The campaign offered a complete rig comprising of 1 x CL5 Console along with 2 x Rio3224D I/O Dante Digital Stage Racks making for a very capable 72 In 48 return system. Event Companies were invited to try out the system for up to 72 hours on a first-come-first-served basis. A limited time campaign meant bookings were filled out almost instantly but also allowed a few event and rental companies to take the opportunity to use the system on some notable events. The first use of the test drive came in the form of a ‘magical event ‘ - the internationally acclaimed magic act, ‘The Illusionists ‘. A show unlike any seen in the region; packed audiences of residents and visitors were kept spell-bound by the 7 member strong team of illusionists during each of their thrilling shows that ran for 10 days. The venue was Sheikh Rashid Hall at The World Trade Center, Dubai and Glow Productions was the chosen rental and event production company. The initial rider was for a PM5D for the front-of-house and M7CL on the monitors. However, although Glow Productions already owned a pair of Yamaha CL1 consoles, the complexity of the show meant that they needed to bring in a larger format mixer than the 48 channels of the CL1. Glow Production’s Managing Director Savio Mendonca approached Thomsun to hire a CL5 for the show but was pleasantly surprised when help came in the form of 2 x Yamaha CL5 that Thomsun offered for the show. Glow’s own Yamaha RiO stage boxes could be used with these as well. Illusionist’s tour sound Engineer from BG Audio Slovakia, Jakub Skriniar was both impressed and thrilled when Glow offered to replace both the PM5D and M7CL consoles with the new CL5s. The simplicity and robustness of the Dante Network and the presence of Thomsun support staff Varun Ashokan and Alok Ghurde ensured that system setup went off within the very tight deadline available for Glow to put the change in place. Yamaha’s handy Console File convertor utility tool allowed Jakub Skriniar to have his entire show transferred to the new CL5 console in a matter of minutes. The two and a half hour Illusion act was a perfectly co-ordinated sequence of mis-directions, precise timings, skilful execution and deft distractions that were helped in no small measure by the music from a live 5 piece band and a large ensemble of dancers and support cast. “The excellent performance delivered by Yamaha’s CL5 during the entire 10 days of the show was a source of constant satisfaction and admiration for the entire team.” commented Glow Production’s Gavin Mendonca. Another well established and large rental and events production company used a similar set of 2 x Yamaha CL5 units for a musical concert as part of a private and exclusive wedding party.
